Isle of Wight Mercury

I will ask you to allow me space to correct some very misleading statements made by a clergyman in his Sunday address to men. He was speaking on the subject, "The Bible and Modern Thought," and, as reported in the Mercury, said: "The Bible bears on the surface the mark of a divine origin. The sacred books of other religions, Buddhism, Mohammedanism, Christian Science, et cetera, are the products of one person, written during one lifetime." These few words contain statements which have no relation to the teachings of Christian Science, which cannot be classed with Buddhism or Mohammedanism. Christian Science is founded squarely on the Bible; and its first tenet, as given in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is (p. 497), "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life." It is a well-known fact that Christian Scientists study the Bible more earnestly and more regularly than most Bible students, and with the light thrown on it by the textbook of Christian Science, the teachings are made practical in daily living, just as they were used by the disciples instructed by Jesus. Our Master said, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead;" and, "These signs shall follow them that believe." These commands are again obeyed through the study of the Bible as taught in Christian Science. If the clergyman were found reading one of the valuable commentaries on the Bible written by learned men, he would not therefore forfeit his right to be known as a student and lover of the Bible, and Christian Scientists also retain the Bible while they are helped to study it correctly and intelligently with the Christian Science textbook. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 363) Mrs. Eddy says, "The Bible is the learned man's masterpiece, the ignorant man's dictionary, the wise man's directory;" and in Science and Health (p. 24) she speaks of the Bible as "the chart of life, where the buoys and healing currents of Truth are pointed out."
