It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I write my testimony to add to the unnumbered proofs, through the operation of Christian Science, of God's presence with His children.

My first healing—and surely a very important one—was of self-satisfaction with my own religion. I say "self-satisfaction," because I called it my religion and I condemned Christian Science, of which I knew nothing, only having heard that Christian Scientists were cranks. Then I made friends with one who was interested in Christian Science and we spoke of it one evening. Although telling her that she could believe in its teaching if she liked, I again metaphorically wrapped myself up in my cloak of self-satisfaction; but it was not for long.

At that time I was suffering with swollen and painful glands under the arms. Well, that evening, after my smug remarks, one of God's thoughts found entrance into my consciousness, and asked me if I had knowledge of that which I was condemning. I was very silent for a while, but later was humble enough to ask my friend if I might have a look at the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I sat reading it for a few minutes, and then my thoughts suddenly reverted to the swollen glands. I realized I had no pain, and that the swelling had disappeared. The first four lines in the chapter on Prayer, which include the very words I needed, "an unselfed love," had healed me morally and therefore physically.
