The Simplicity of God, Good
"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious." Through the years mankind has been reaching for Truth; and piteous have been its cries, because slow has seemed the way, and painful. "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me," said Jesus; but mankind often seems unwilling to follow his teachings. It seems not to be willing to start with the rudiments of good; rather does it seek the fruits of knowledge without having patiently tended the seed planted by the Master until it ripens into fruitfulness.
Fortunately these rudiments are already generally known, although not so generally practiced. Men have been taught with more or less persistence for centuries, and the reason the rudiments have not been more generally practiced is that men have sought an easier way, a way that would not make such heavy demands on moral forces.
Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, came teaching the truth about God and man. He taught the simple beginnings; moreover, he established his teachings by living and proving them. Who is ready and willing to follow his lead? Who is willing to sell all that he has to buy the "pearl of great price"? Until this is done, until the rudiments of good are learned and practiced, we may be sure that the deep things of God will be as securely hidden as are the rules of arithmetic from him who is ignorant of the multiplication tables.
