Reassurance

Each heart knows, when comfort comes to it from above, that the Comforter is divine, not human. It brings "the peace of God," which passes all understanding by mortal thought; for spiritual sense alone comprehends it.

The year 1894 was a memorable one to Christian Scientists and to the world. Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, had impressed it upon her followers that if The Mother Church edifice was not built in 1894 many years might elapse before the same point could again be reached. That our Leader set the date for the dedication of the church was proof of her conviction that, through meekness and obedience in her followers, divine Mind could and would overcome every material obstacle that mortal mind's resistance to Truth might throw in the way of this great achievement. Our Leader's faith was sublime, her understanding adequate. Her loyal followers felt, and understood in a degree, the importance of the task of building The Mother Church edifice in 1894; for, as our Leader pointed out, it was the immediate demonstration to be made in the orderly establishment of the Cause of Christian Science on earth.

In November of 1894 the following experience brought great assurance and strength to the writer. One day, while shopping in one of the Boston stores, she glanced down at her hand resting on the counter and noticed that the diamond was gone from her ring. Her first thought was, Oh, I am not working rightly for The Mother Church! The stone had been a little loose in its setting; and it was instantly seen that carelessness in a minor matter might well betoken carelessness in the great and important matter of right work for The Mother Church.
