Man's True Spiritual Nature

Christian Science is declaring the fact to the world that the real man is spiritual. It teaches that God is infinite Spirit, the creator of all that exists; and since God is infinite Spirit, it maintains that creation—the entire universe, including man—must be spiritual. The teaching of Christian Science about man is thus in complete accord with the record of creation given in the first chapter and the first five verses of the second chapter of Genesis, entirely in agreement with the words, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him."

And as the teaching of Christian Science about the real man accords with that of the beginning of Genesis, so does it agree with the declaration of Christ Jesus. The Master said on a certain occasion "to the multitude, and to his disciples," "Call no man your father upon the earth; for one is your Father, which is in heaven," obviously pointing them to the truth of the spiritual origin and nature of man. Likewise, the Apostle Paul showed himself to be of the same understanding when he wrote to the Corinthians, "Henceforth know we no man after the flesh."

The truth of the entirely spiritual nature of man is thus fundamental to the student of Christian Science. Not for a moment does he doubt the fact, however persistently the physical senses may seem to clamor on behalf of the reality of matter and material selfhood; and always his endeavor is to put his understanding into practice when the suggestions of materiality assail him. He strives continually to hold his thought steadfastly to Truth, firm in his adherence to Mrs. Eddy's words in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 151), "Every function of the real man is governed by the divine Mind."
