Christian Science came to me after physicians had...

Christian Science came to me after physicians had said there was nothing more to be done. At this time I was with the Red Cross in a Government hospital, and had not only been to their doctors in the hospital but to several throat specialists. In each case, the doctors pronounced the trouble acute throat infection, saying that there was nothing to do except to operate,—not once, but several times,—and that there was little, if any, chance for recovery.

The friend with whom I was staying was a Christian Scientist, but up to this time, Christian Science had never been mentioned by either one of us. After the specialists had told me they could do nothing more for me, I went home and asked this friend for Christian Science help. A practitioner was called, and within a week I was back on duty again, completely healed. This was a convincing proof to me of the healing power of divine Science. I quickly discerned that the correct application of this power was what mankind needed.

It was not long until a still greater proof of God's healing power came to me through the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. For seventeen years I had worn glasses, and during these years I had gone to see some of the best known eye specialists in this country, and had had medical attention almost continually. All the doctors said the trouble was paralysis of the optic nerve; that with the aid of my glasses I might keep some sight in the right eye, but could never hope to see more with the left eye, with which I could only tell light from darkness. After a few months' study of Christian Science, and with the help of a practitioner and my friend, I learned that "eyes" mean "spiritual discernment," as Mrs. Eddy says in her definition of "eyes" on page 586 of the textbook. I also learned that one thing is no more difficult for God to heal than another, and that nothing could withhold from me a faculty which God had given me. One evening, as I was reading, everything became blurred and my glasses seemed to bother me. As I could not read clearly, I decided that it was of no use to try any more until morning, and I retired. In the morning, I could see perfectly with the right eye without glasses, and somewhat more distinctly than before with the left eye. I am indeed grateful to say that now I can read the finest print with either eye. I have never had a moment's pain, and have never worn glasses since that morning.
