The evangelist whom your paper reports as making the statement, "If you substitute Buddha, or Mary Baker Eddy, or any other religious idol which fails to accept Christ as the Saviour, you are lost," displays an abysmal ignorance of the true teachings of Christian Science. The critic's statement would have the uninformed believe that Christian Scientists worship the personality of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and author of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The fact is that Mrs. Eddy admonishes her followers, "Study the Bible and the textbook of our denomination; obey strictly the laws that be, and follow your Leader only so far as she follows Christ" (Message to The Mother Church for 1901, p. 34).

The most superficial investigation of Mrs. Eddy's teachings, before presuming to criticize them, would show that they are in strict accord with the Bible—the Bible that reveals to us the living Christ, the Saviour of the world. The unprejudiced mind well knows that Christian Science has been proved a demonstrable religion, removed many leagues from Oriental philosophy and mysticism. In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 119) Mrs. Eddy writes: "Think not that Christian Science tends towards Buddhism or any other 'ism.' Per contra, Christian Science destroys such tendency."
