Spiritual Law

When a great statesman once said, "Law is beneficence acting by rule," he was stating a spiritual fact which humanity has perceived with more or less clarity. When we realize, however, how much of the evidence of human existence is gained through the material senses and the so-called laws of matter governing them, it is not surprising that such laws have been accepted as real; nor is it surprising that anything reversing them should have been considered supernatural, a special dispensation of God. On the other hand, it is an inspiring fact to the spiritually-minded that in the very midst of the materialism of many ages, the Bible developed a consecutive, consistent account of the presence of a law higher than so-called material laws, operating contrary to them, rising above them and completely annulling them.

Abraham faintly discerned this spiritual law, and expressed his discernment in dignified and kindly benevolence and trusting faith. Jacob caught a glimpse of it in his struggle at Peniel. Joseph perceived it, and could forgive his brethren. Moses grasped it in his elucidation of the moral law. The prophets foretold it, and proved it in many miracles; while Christ Jesus understood it fully, and demonstrated it with invariable and unerring accuracy.

In our own day Christian Science has come to interpret this spiritual law for all mankind; and Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has so lucidly defined its spiritual nature and manifestation that "he may run that readeth it." In answer to the question, "How would you define Christian Science?" on page 1 of "Rudimental Divine Science," she has written, "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."
