Letters from the Field

"For some time I have desired to express something of my deep appreciation of a visit of six weeks at the Christian Science sanatorium in the summer of 1923. This experience was as an oasis in the desert. Never did God, as divine Love, seem so near and so dear to me. Never was the study of the Bible and of Mrs. Eddy's writings so absorbing and helpful. My outlook was broadened, brightened, and uplifted, though there were many arguments of self to be uncovered and overcome.

"I cannot say enough for the sweet, scientific, friendly service of nurses, waitresses, maids, office assistants, and all connected with the institution. Also, I value greatly the friendships formed with other guests.

"Truly, it seems to me, does the work there exemplify Mrs. Eddy's words on pages 287 and 288 of 'The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany': 'Philanthropy is loving, ameliorative, revolutionary; it wakens lofty desires, new possibilities, achievements, and energies; it lays the axe at the root of the tree that bringeth not forth good fruit; it touches thought to spiritual issues, systematizes action, and insures success; it starts the wheels of right reason, revelation, justice, and mercy; it unselfs men and pushes on the ages. Love unfolds marvellous good and uncovers hidden evil.'
