Daily Demands

In his first epistle to the Corinthians, Paul writes, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able." And on page 233 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy, the author, says that "progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil."

Christian Science is a progressive faith, because it is founded upon the divine law of progress. There is, therefore, a demand made upon us if we would progress; but both Paul and Mrs. Eddy assure us that there is no temptation too great for us to resist, and no righteous demand we cannot fulfill. In the paragraph quoted from above, Mrs. Eddy says, "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power."

One cannot, then, progress in Christian Science merely by his professions: he must meet the daily demands for higher proofs of his advanced spiritual understanding of God's law and the application of the rules of the divine Principle underlying it, which bring out progressively higher proofs, or demonstrations, of Christian power. Disobedience to this law, in failure to respond to its demands each day, must ultimate in penalty or discipline in some form, perhaps in uncertainty, confusion, disappointment, or fear. Self-will, self-opinion, or self-confidence may claim to assert itself in our thought and temporarily rule out the Christ from our human consciousness. We must, therefore, be alert, vigilant, and actively prepared, keeping ourselves in a suitable mental state to meet, with scientific certainty, the events of each day; then whatever comes or befalls, we shall find our understanding of God's law available and sufficient to meet every demand and to resist every evil temptation. Supply is ever equal to demand—yea, far in excess of any demand; but it rests with us individually to prove the fact by demonstration.
