One Sunday morning a few years ago, I passed a Christian Science church and stopped to converse with a friend who was a student of Christian Science. When I left her she lovingly invited me to attend the Christian Science services. I thanked her, with the mental reservation that no one but one who was "down and out" attended that church.
A few months later I was "down and out," mentally and physically, having been told by the doctors that I should have to submit to a second major operation, the first having been performed less than a year before. This extremity proved to be God's opportunity. After making all arrangements to go to a hospital for this operation and calling a taxi to take me to the train, I decided to try Christian Science, and asked a practitioner for treatment. He said he would take my case if I would not go to the hospital; and the voice of Truth was so powerful that I realized I could not serve God and mammon, so decided to rely absolutely on God. My healing extended over a period of seven months, and I often said that I could remember nothing I read but one sentence: "God is love."
For the benefit of those who may be in bondage to discouragement, I will say that that sentence was all I needed at the time; it met my need, although I did not realize it. One day, while reading the Lesson-Sermon, I read this verse in the Bible: "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?" For three days I dwelt on this verse, realizing that however great the seeming sense of injustice, I could not hate man, who is made in God's image and likeness, without hating God. Needless to say, this revelation obliterated all sense of hate; and I was healed instantaneously.
