[Written for the Sentinel]

God's Presence

I loved the night, for then it seemed
That I was nearer Thee, O Father.
When the clash and clamor of the day
Had silent grown, and mortal thought
Had ceased its vain and useless strife,
In the quiet of night I was alone with Thee.
I seemed to feel Thee nearer, Father, then;
And in calm serenity of consciousness
I talked with Thee, and knew Thy presence—
Knew that Thy all-powerful
Yet tender loving arm encircled me;
Held in Thy unfaltering, faithful love,
I found my rest. Thou, Father-Mother, God,
Art ever with me; and I know
That where Thou art no ill can come,
And all my needless fears subside.
For well I know that Thy protecting care,
Thine infinite love surrounds me now,
For Thou art Love, and All-in-all.
My hand fast held in Thine I feel
The confidence, security, and peace
Thy presence giveth; knowing Thou
Art here, I rise to find the light
Of Truth; and lo, there is no night!
