When the healing truth revealed in Christian Science...
When the healing truth revealed in Christian Science was first brought to my attention I was very bitter and discouraged. Disappointed in one I had loved and trusted, I hated him and myself, and was so disillusioned about life I did not wish to live. A friend gave me a book to read. On returning it I idly asked if a passage in it referred to her religion. She said it did not, but that she had been healed in Christian Science of rheumatism. Knowing that she had been using crutches, but was now well and strong, I asked her about her healing. She told me, and I was sincerely interested. She noticed that it had seemed reasonable to me that she had been healed entirely through prayer, and asked if I would care to go to church with her. I thanked her, and agreed to go. I did not care for religion, and had not been to church for years, although brought up a Presbyterian; and I did not think of getting help for myself in Christian Science. Because I was well I thought I was all right; but I had a sister who had not been well for several years, and I thought she needed Christian Science.
It was a sunshiny Sunday morning, and the church we attended in New York city had a yellow glass dome, in the center of which I saw the word "Love"; the Lesson-Sermon was on "Love"; and the hymns were about a loving God. I can never put into words what that service meant to me, but I was healed of hatred and bitterness right then. I shed tears, but I know now they were not unhappy ones, and they washed away much of self.
I borrowed "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy from a loan library the next day, and was able to buy one in three weeks. I denied myself some material things and bought Mrs. Eddy's other writings, and grew happier all the time. I had two increases in salary. Shortly after attending my first service I had a quick healing of a badly sprained ankle, not losing a minute from business; and thus I found by proof what a treasure the truth of Christian Science is.
