My gratitude to Christian Science is great for the proofs...
My gratitude to Christian Science is great for the proofs that it has given me of the all-power of divine Love. More than twenty years ago my attention was drawn to it. During the following years, however, I took no interest in it. It was only in 1917 that I began to study, not to find physical healing, but following upon certain unexpected events in my family.
From the beginning, my wife and I had the opportunity to practice the little we had learned. The elder of our boys, then just learning to walk, fell against a hook on his chair, making a deep wound in his cheek. Having asked help from a practitioner, we had the joy of seeing our child's face become normal in a short time, and without any other help than that of Christian Science. A little later, helped and guided always with untiring kindness by the practitioner, we had another demonstration of the divine power at the birth of our second child, when all took place most harmoniously, although some weeks before, the midwife had made most gloomy predictions. I should add that during this time we were not for one moment seized with fear, knowing that in God's universe all expresses God, and that under His government discord has neither place nor power. Some time later the baby was healed of a very stubborn case of constipation by the application of the truth alone. About four years ago, I had a bad sore throat. I could not swallow anything without great suffering. This difficulty was overcome after two days' treatment.
Some time ago our boy, seven and a half years old, began to cough rather steadily. During one night he coughed a great deal, but as the next day was the opening day of school, he wanted to go. Although we were undecided, we encouraged him and helped him with our thoughts. Nevertheless, at ten o'clock his teacher sent him home; for which I was very grateful to her. I then decided to ask for help in Science, which was lovingly given. The child went to bed and had rather a painful time. Toward evening it seemed as if the cough lessened, but the night which followed was worse. I shall not go into details, but I can truly say that we struggled the entire night. If at times my faith threatened to waver, I repeated "the scientific statement of being," which is found in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 468). Then the child would sleep for a few moments and I again would find the strength necessary to continue the battle. In the morning a slight improvement was apparent, and I informed the practitioner of what had taken place in the night. We knew, however, that in Science the child, as God's idea, was spiritual and perfect, and that this seeming inharmony, like others, would vanish before the understanding of Truth. On the afternoon of the same day the child was much better and fell asleep about half past seven, not to awaken until the next morning at seven, without having coughed once. He got up about two o'clock, and went back to school after two and a half days of absence; and no one but ourselves would have suspected the great victory Truth had again won.
