In a recent issue of your paper there appeared an article under the title, "My Religion: What it Means to Me." Among other things, the writer described briefly some lectures by Judge Troward of Edinburgh on mental science. In this article he likened Christian Science to mental science and Coueism. In order that your readers may not confound these systems with the religion of Christian Science, permit me to say that the truth which Mrs. Eddy discovered came to her through divine revelation. From childhood Mrs. Eddy was a devout student of the Bible. Experiencing a serious accident, which the doctors pronounced fatal, she asked for her Bible and began reading at Matthew 9:2. Her thought was so illumined with spiritual understanding that she was instantly healed, and was enabled at once to rise from her bed. Realizing the Principle of Mind-healing to be God, she felt the need of discovering its rule and action.

Withdrawing from society for three years, she proved, through a deep and prayerful study of the Scriptures, the absolute power of divine Science, which she afterward set forth in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." On this point she says (p. 109), "The revelation of Truth in the understanding came to me gradually and apparently through divine power." Christian Science teaches the allness of the one Mind, God, and the nothingness of the so-called human or carnal mind, which "is enmity against God." Along this line Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 275): "Divine metaphysics, as revealed to spiritual understanding, shows clearly that all is Mind, and that Mind is God, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,—that is, all power, all presence, all Science. Hence all is in reality the manifestation of Mind." Jesus taught this doctrine. Mrs. Eddy has given it to the world to-day in such a form that it can be proved in human affairs. One can readily see that such a religion, founded on the teachings of the Master, cannot be likened to any so-called mental science or systems based on mere human reasoning.
