The article against Christian Science by a clergyman of the Church of England in your issue for July is regarded by Christian Scientists as lacking in appreciation and fairness. This letter, therefore, is submitted for publication.

The attitude toward Christian Science shown by the writer in question is illustrated by his assertion that it "has no single claim to be called Christian." In direct conflict with the assertion here quoted is the following excerpt from the Encyclical Letter issued by the Archbishops and Bishops assembled in the Lambeth Conference of 1920: "There is much in Christian Science which ought to be found within the Church, where it would be supplemented by truths which in Christian Science are neglected." Surely what ought to be found within the Anglican Church must be Christian.

The method of opposition used by the writer in question is illustrated by the following excerpts from his article: "Mrs. Eddy definitely and clearly denies the atonement, since there is no evil from which man can be redeemed." "The idea of divine Providence is emptied of all its meaning, since God knows nothing of this world of pain and sin." "So prayer in times of trouble and suffering is necessarily excluded, since it is impossible for God to be conscious of any of the pains which we suffer."
