Preparation
Through the study of Christian Science we learn the great value of unselfed love, and how to attain this most desirable and beautiful quality of thought, which removes mountains and makes the rough places plain. What store was placed upon it by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose life was the exemplification of unselfed love! Our heart goes our in deep gratitude to God for her example; and every conscientious student of Christian Science strives, through humility and self-abnegation, to approximate it.
Many records of unselfed love and what it can achive may be found in the Bible. A particularly helpful instance is recounted in the last two chapters of I Chronicles. It is the record of David's final achievement. Here we read that he greatly desired to build a house of rest for the "ark of the covenant," but as he had been "a man of war" God chose Solomon, his son, to build it. God had given David the pattern of the building to the minutest detail, and arranged for the service of His house. "Then David gave to Solomon his son ... the pattern of all that he had by the spirit." The record reveals love triumphant. Error had been forestalled, for we do not read of any stoppage or backward step to the work, but rather of harmonious progress.
What a wonderful demonstration of unselfed love was David's! His example inspired the whole congregation to the same consecrated service. And when their preparations were complete, there arose a pæan of praise and thanksgiving to God, the Giver of all good. When the preparatory work was so perfect, it is not surprising that Solomon's temple was so wonderfully constructed, and so beautiful in every detail. Yet, it took years to build it! Truly patience is necessary to the achievement of any great undertaking.
