The Christian Science Sentinel, dated February 3, 1923,...
The Christian Science Sentinel, dated February 3, 1923, is a particularly helpful one to me, and I feel a joyful impulsion to corroborate one of the articles and a testimony. The editorial entitled "Prayer in Church" brings to mind an experience of instantaneous healing during the short interval of silent prayer. At its commencement my throat and chest felt as if on fire and I was unable to speak above a whisper; at its close I was healed, and sang the next hymn with such joy and gratitude! I simply had to sing! Of course I shall never know whether some loving realization of Truth went up from one who had noticed my distress, or whether it was just the prayers of the congregation, obediently offered for each other according to the By-law in the Church Manual (p. 42), which resulted in my healing; but I do know that the value of our Leader's loving and wise counsels was once more proved; and the spiritual uplift of that proof is one of my most valued possessions.
The testimony referred to is given by a Second Reader in New Zealand; and this, too, calls forth a hearty response. For a time I held the office of First Reader in a Christian Science Society (now First Church) on the northeast coast of England. The weather was bitterly cold and I was struggling against error, in the guise of a severe attack of sore throat, cough, and its attendant miseries. On Friday afternoon our Second Reader came to me for the usual reading over of the Lesson-Sermon in preparation for the Sunday service. About halfway through I found it impossible to proceed, and most reluctantly suggested that some one else be called upon. The following night I felt feverish and miserably ill. The practitioner whose help I had requested, called the next morning and gave me fresh hope and courage.
On Sunday I was able to wade through very deep snow and to face a cutting wind to attend our only service, then held in the afternoon; but I was even then not quite sure but that some one else would have to read, as my voice was very husky and uncertain. However, after one of the happiest of intervals (before the service commenced), in which surely the dear Father-Mother God sent His angels to point out that the battle was not mine, that I could "of mine own self do nothing," and that God was conducting the service, simply using me as an instrument, I was able to read from beginning to end, clearly and joyfully, without the slightest hesitation.
