I have known of this beautiful healing truth for about twenty years, and it can be given all the credit for my stay upon this earth. I had been an invalid for about seventeen years, suffering from what the doctors called hardening of the liver, tumors, dyspepsia, cancer, and double beat of the heart. Only those who have been in bondage to such diseases can realize the hopelessness and misery they bring. We went everywhere and tried everything; but I was like the woman spoken of in the Scriptures who "had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." Thus this great truth found us.

Being a German, I knew the German Bible, and had derived many blessings and comforts from it. I felt that God could heal, but it seemed to me we did not know how to pray aright. At this time our desire to know God better, and to gain more light and understanding, was answered through a friend, who told us of Christian Science. A practitioner came to our home and quickly awakened us from the beliefs of living in matter and from accepting only man-made laws. I was lifted spiritually, but not then permanently healed. After she left, my only desire was to read and know more. As I could not read English, and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was not printed in German at that time, I tried to remember what others read to me; but this seemed so unsatisfactory that again helplessness overcame me. Thanks to God, after a year of earnest prayer and striving, the thought came to me that God is neither German nor English and those who will may know Him; and from that time on I could read Science and Health.

We have had many proofs, during these years, of God's goodness. One of the family was healed of tuberculosis, one of diphtheria, when it seemed too late, another of rupture and paralysis; and burns, catarrh, fevers have been overcome. In fact, it seems to me I cannot recount all our blessings.
