Meekness and Might

The Scriptures furnish innumerable examples of the association of meekness and might, and of the invulnerability of this potent combination. Mrs. Eddy says of our Saviour, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 30, 31), "In meekness and might, he was found preaching the gospel to the poor;" and she adds, "Pride and fear are unfit to bear the standard of Truth, and God will never place it in such hands."

How good a thing it is to be healed, even partially, of self-importance! Our Leader tells us, "Self-love is more opaque than a solid body" (ibid., p. 242); and all who have been healed in any degree of the blindness of self-importance, and are gratefully rejoicing in the resultant perception of true selfhood, will readily acknowledge the truth of her statement. Only through this healing, through the light which Christian Science brings to the darkened human consciousness, can the deep, abiding joy and invincible might of humility be even partially revealed.

Our Master said that the kingdom of heaven belongs to the poor in spirit, and that the meek shall inherit the earth. Note the assurance and the promise. The kingdom of heaven is already in the possession of the poor in spirit, and the earth is to be the inheritance of the meek. That is to say, the poor in spirit already perceive man's sonship with God in the reign of universal harmony, and the meek shall certainly demonstrate all good in their human experience. What a wonderful sense of dominion and strength is here coupled with humility or meekness! How clear it is, how strong, and how it warms the heart with gratitude to her who endured so much—with meekness and might—to make these qualities something more to suffering humanity in this age. Mrs. Eddy has shown them to be demonstrable!
