I believe Christian Scientists, as a class, enjoy clever wit and commendable humor as much as do other people. The item under consideration, however, which quotes a discontented housewife as saying, "I can't keep this house on Christian Science," would leave the reader with the impression that possibly there are those who, through Christian Science, manage to run a home without money, or possibly just by thinking they have money. I assure you this is not done and cannot be done in Christian Science; and it is to correct such an impression that I submit this comment. Christian Science is essentially a practical religion. While Christian Science teaches that God is the source of all good, its followers do not ignore the fact that there are physical needs which must seemingly be supplied. Genuine Christian Scientists are ever striving to realize the demonstrable truth set forth in Mrs. Eddy's statement in "Miscellaneous Writings," where, on page 307, she says, "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies." And, while thus attributing all power to God as the divine source of all supply, they nevertheless endeavor to live after the manner of representative citizens.
