After I had suffered frequently for a number of years from an intestinal complaint, with appendicitis and hemorrhoidal trouble, I had an especially severe attack a few years ago, which again caused me to seek the advice of a physician. He discovered that there was not only a slight rupture, but also a growing together of the bowels, and advised an operation if the trouble became worse. Six months before, I had lost my eldest son, at the age of twelve and a half years, and while I was still under the shock of this loss, my early death before the next attack was prophesied. When, in addition to this difficulty, I became ill with influenza, I too believed in the prophecy made for me, and so made arrangements with the doctor for the operation, if by that time I should have recovered from the effects of the influenza.

In this mental and physical extremity I recalled a conversation I had had with a dear colleague soon after the death of my son, in which, in order to comfort me, he told me of the teachings of Christian Science concerning God's ever present help and love. I grasped at this anchor, began to read in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and went to a practitioner. Although doubt assailed me for a time, I noticed after three days that a change was taking place in me. My physical troubles lessened considerably, and the enlightenment, which was given me in a most loving and patient manner, strengthened my trust and uplifted my consciousness. I began to believe in the care and protection of God, and took pains to put away mentally anything which could be a hindrance to me. When I went to the physician two weeks later for an extension of the certificate for my authorities, and was again examined, he was astonished not only at my changed appearance and cheerful mental state, but even more at the disappearance of the intestinal trouble. He declared that I was completely healed, and that an operation was no longer necessary. After every doubt had been removed from me in this direction also, I began to realize what love and goodness had been bestowed upon me by God; and I was filled with a blissful feeling of being safe in every emergency. I have not been ill since that day. I am grateful to God with all my heart for His goodness, love, and care, and I hold in reverence the dear woman—Mrs. Eddy—who showed the way to mental and physical health and to this trust and grace.

In the meantime I have seen two additional healings, in the case of my nine-year-old son. He returned home from school one day during my absence and asked his mother to put him to bed immediately, as he did not feel well. After an hour's sleep he awoke with a high fever. Since he had formerly been healed of nervous gestures through the application of the teachings of Christian Science, he asked, in spite of the bad weather, to be allowed to go to a practitioner. After an hour the boy returned, joyous, free from fever, and eager to eat. He did his work, and played as if he had never been ill. Another time he felt ill and suffered from a bad cough. He seemed to have a fever, and his bowels had been inactive for several days. This culminated in a severe attack of measles. Again he found loving enlightenment through the same practitioner. The cough disappeared the same day, and digestion became normal without any material help. In two more days he was completely well again.
