Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are...
Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." How well I remember one morning, early in 1914, when a friend called me over the telephone, inviting me to luncheon, and my answer was, "I simply cannot go; I am too weary to move, and have about reached the end of my strength." Her answer came quickly, "You are ready for Christian Science." I knew little or nothing of it at that time, but was willing at her suggestion to call on a practitioner that afternoon. I am sure I expected a miracle to happen that day, and was so disappointed because it did not happen just as I expected, that I was rebellious. I was suffering from stomach and bowel trouble of twenty years' standing. This had brought on other discordant conditions, such as chronic appendicitis, colitis, gastritis, and other intestinal disorders, as well as hemorrhoids (for which I had already been operated upon). I was also pronounced by the physicians to be a neurasthenic. I gave up all thought of Christian Science at that time, but did not again consult a physician. I know now that I received help in that first visit without realizing it.
Four months later, through other friends, I was led to call on another practitioner and again ask for help. This time I had a number of treatments, but seemingly the several diseases were not healed. I struggled along for a year and a half, when we moved to another city. About six weeks later, through some Scientists I met in the hotel where we were stopping, I again took up Christian Science treatments, earnestly hoping to be relieved of the terrific fear that was beginning to take hold of me. After three months' treatment I was healed. Previously I had not known what it was not to take medicine night and morning, and was called by my family "the human apothecary shop." I then began my real study of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. To learn about God had become my one ambition. How I can ever express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, I do not know! Through Science and Health and her other works, I am knowing God better.
I wish also to express my sincere gratitude for the Church Manual. It has helped me to solve many problems. So many times, things that I want to do I do not do after reading the Manual; and I always have cause later on to be grateful for my obedience.
