The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Portland, Maine (First Church).

Lecturer: The Hon. William E. Brown. Introducer: Governor Ralph O. Brewster.

A half century ago the leaders in the world's thinking taught that religion and science were antagonistic, and gradually the world has reaped the harvest of agnosticism that was thus sown. To-day the mental pioneers of humanity are declaring that religion and science are not opposed, although the basis of the reconciliation is not to them yet clear, and so cannot be told. Meanwhile in that dark night of materialism the voice of a lone New England woman, born amid our granite hills, declared the eternal unity of true religion and true Science. Accepting without equivocation a dictionary definition of science as "knowledge classified and made available in work, life, or the search for truth," she rested absolutely upon demonstration in establishing the fundamental proposition that, as she says on page 313 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific man that ever trod the globe," and that the Science of Christianity is the solution of every difficulty of mankind. This audience is typical of millions who have since gathered to be blessed by the messages that she brought. In the quest for true happiness, the world is not satisfied with the husky fare of materialistic teachings upon which it has been fed, and is hungrily turning homeward to the spiritual source for the satisfaction that shall endure. Here a constantly increasing host have found rest and peace.
