The Business-Man and His Possessions
Christian Science, to descend to a vernacular phrase, may be said to be an excellent business proposition. Countless men have testified at Wednesday evening meetings in Christian Science churches that Christian Science is a positive help in solving business problems. As a religion, it appeals to these men because it gives them something practical, which, when applied correctly, unfailingly brings results. Its Science is mathematically accurate, because it is of God. Its rules are simple.
One business-man speaks of his possessions. He has a house and a motor car and so many shares of stock. He is doing well enough, but he makes excuses. There is always something just a little wrong, always some condition about which to complain. Another business-man, relying on Christian Science, never complains. Whatever the trouble is, he is sure it will be overcome. To him Christian Science is divine Science, the infallible Science of God, good. It is absolute; it never fails. Fear about any business situation is not long retained when this Science is relied on.
The question of one's possessions is an important one. In I Kings we read that when the Lord asked Solomon what he desired above all else the answer came, "Give ... thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad." Solomon knew that spiritual understanding was the most valuable asset he could possess. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
