Phoenix
Dr. Milliken, as reported, says: "The philosophical and theological system, if it can be called either philosophy or theology, in which is supposed to be incased the belief of a class of peoples including our Christian Science friends and kindred cults, that there is no sickness or suffering in human existence, is so utterly involved and so beyond the reach of ordinary reasonable comprehension, that given time and advancement of knowledge its absurdity will soon be apparent to all."
Dr. Milliken should know that this is exactly what Christian Science does not teach. In personal interviews and in the press he has been told the truth; and surely the books are plain enough. On page 396 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says, "Sickness is formed by the human mind, not by matter nor by the divine Mind." The Christian Scientist is in perfect accord with him in declaring that the human or carnal mind experiences sin and pain.
All fair-minded critics have long ago given up the onetime popular accusation that Quimby had aught to do with the truth expounded in Science and Health. In 1883 in the district court of Massachusetts, the question arose of the copyright of Science and Health, and the court decided then and there that there was no relationship between the Quimby manuscripts and the Christian Science textbook. Again, more recently the "Quimby Manuscripts" were examined by the Rev. Lyman P. Powell, formerly Episcopal rector at Northampton, Massachusetts, and later president of Hobart College, and he has stated: "Christian Science, as it is to-day, is really its Founder's creation. Where she got this idea or where that, it little matters. As a whole the system described in Science and Health is hers, and nothing can make it less than hers."
