In a recent issue of the Baltimore American there is a statement that attempts to explain the reason why Christian Science is so effective in healing diseases. The reason, as given by the writer of the article, is that there is a "spirit in man and the belief that nine tenths of diseases flee before an aggressive spirit."

I should like to inform the readers of your paper that Christian Science is effective because it heals by spiritual means,—the Word of God applied with understanding, which makes diseases "flee." When equipped with the understanding that disease is unreal, because God did not create it, one naturally rejects a suggestion of sickness; and in proportion to his understanding is he able to master the enemy. When confronted with an erroneous condition, be it sickness or discord of any sort, a Christian Scientist utilizes his God-given dominion to defend himself and says, in the words of the Master, "Get thee behind me, Satan." To the extent that he is able to realize the powerlessness of an illegitimate claim like sickness, to that extent is he able to overcome it. On page 167 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says: "We apprehend Life in divine Science only as we live above corporeal sense and correct it. Our proportionate admission of the claims of good or of evil determines the harmony of our existence,—our health, our longevity, and our Christianity."

To keep one's "inner self [consciousness] strong and valiant and courageous" is to fortify one's self against the attacks of evil; but, in order to shield one's self, one must have understanding,—one must know that God supplies what is needed to preserve man. To know that courage is a quality of God and that the quantity of courage is unlimited enables one to cast out fear and, by dependence on God, carries one "through" untoward conditions. It should be understood that divine help is necessary to accomplish good results. Jesus said, "I can of mine own self do nothing."
