"In the way of God's appointing"

On page 326 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" we read, "If we wish to follow Christ, Truth, it must be in the way of God's appointing." All students of Christian Science agree as to the truth of this statement, and concede that it is possible to follow Truth only as God appoints the way. Since we can find no disagreement with the statement, it is apparent that the frequent wandering from the way of God's appointing is the result of some error other than ignorance of its meaning.

To follow Truth "in the way of God's appointing" is the highest interpretation of obedience. On page 117 of "Miscellaneous Writings" our Leader admonishes, "Be sure that God directs your way; then, hasten to follow under every circumstance." How selfless and rich in spirit is that watchful, listening, obedient condition of thought which seeketh not its own, but hasteneth to follow the first ray of divine illumination! Such a follower is indeed heir of the promises to that blessed servant, "whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching."

It is not easy always to follow as God makes plain the way. Error will argue that even Jesus made concessions; and the temptation comes to cease striving for the time being and "suffer it to be so now." Though Jesus made what appeared to be some necessary concessions to the mere forms and conventionalities of his day, we have no record of his ever having made a concession which hindered or forestalled a demonstration of Truth over error. Withstanding temptation of every nature, he ever followed faithfully in the way, from the carpenter's bench in lowly Nazareth up to the demonstration of the glory he had with the Father "before the world was."
