In 1919, I was sent to Colorado by my physician, as my condition seemed very serious. I had tried everything else that would seem to fit my case, and it was thought best to try change of climate. As I grew worse in the town where I first stayed, I went to another; but was taken very ill, and persuaded to go to a hospital. I think I suffered all the agony of pain and starvation while there that a mortal could suffer, as I was being treated for ulcer of the stomach, and the starvation plan was adopted. Finally, as I was getting worse, a change was made and a light diet given, which helped for a time. I left the hospital and stayed several weeks with a relative in the same city, but lived on a milk and egg diet entirely. When the next severe attack came I was taken to another hospital, but found no relief and was sent home.
The doctor took me to the train, and assisted me to a berth in the sleeper which was ready for me. This was at noon. It was on my way from Colorado Springs to Omaha, where I was to change cars, that I met two Christian Scientists, who told me something of Christian Science. I was ready to receive it, as my last hope had gone, and I thought I was returning to my children to die. However, I found the healing I so much longed for. After the Scientists had read and talked to me for about two hours, I fell asleep. I had dreaded the change of cars in Omaha, but one of the Scientists told me I would need no help. I could hardly realize that I could walk off the train alone; but I not only did so, but went to the lunch counter, where I ordered coffee, toast, and egg, and enjoyed my breakfast with no bad results, though I had suffered intensely for so long from all food, even though it was given in small portions two hours apart.
When I arrived home my people met me at the train, and were surprised that I could walk. As they were opposed to Christian Science, I did not at first explain my healing. The Scientists whom I had met had given me a small Bible and a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which I studied at every opportunity I could get. I ate with the others and experienced no distress from a general diet.
