Christian Science came to me at a time when I was without...
Christian Science came to me at a time when I was without hope and without God. I had been filled with an enthusiastic love for everything good and beautiful in the world, but had been condemned to a condition of incapacity for useful service because of heart trouble, which our family physician said was incurable.
Although born of an old New England Puritan family, I could not accept the religion taught me in my youth at Sunday school. I said to the Christian Science practitioner upon whom I first called for help: "I do not believe in God; I do not believe in a hereafter. If under these circumstances you can do anything for me, I shall be very thankful." At this time I was not interested in Christian Science, and was unwilling to read its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I did not seem to get any help. A few months later, upon the earnest solicitation of a friend, I promised to read the textbook. Upon opening the book, one of the first things I read was the question, "What is Life?" and its answer, as found on pages 468 and 469. With this reading some degree of the spiritual understanding of Life was revealed to me, and I said, "This is the truth." It is now the twentieth year since this light broke upon my consciousness. It is needless to say that since this vision of Truth came to me I have had no return of the heart trouble, nor of any of the old symptoms. Year by year I have grown stronger, healthier, and happier. I have grown to love and reverence the Bible. Instead of being a burden to myself and my family, I have been able to earn my own way and to help others. During these many years I have never used any material remedies, Christian Science being my only physician.
My debt of gratitude to Christian Science and to Mrs. Eddy, the noble woman through whom it was brought to us, can be paid only by sharing with the weary and heavy–laden of earth something of the wonderful uplift and inspiration it has brought to me.
