Overcoming
THE Mosaic law demanded "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth," but Christ Jesus came declaring that one should love his neighbor as himself, that one should love his enemies, even those who curse him and despitefully use him. On page 8 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy asks, "Who is thine enemy that thou shouldst love him?" And a little farther on she gives the answer, "Simply count your enemy to be that which defiles, defaces, and dethrones the Christ-image that you should reflect." In short, the only enemy one can in reality have is the false concept one entertains in his own thought, the false belief that good and evil can be expressed by man.
Christian Science has come to this age to show how to correct this false concept with the understanding of the truth about God and man's relation to God. For this Christian Scientists are deeply grateful to the Discoverer and Founder of this Science, Mary Baker Eddy, whose clear vision and close walk with God enabled her to discover its rules and to demonstrate them for herself, and so to give to the world a clear and concise meaning of the laws of spiritual existence, as practiced by Christ Jesus, the master Metaphysician.
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 476, 477) we read: "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick." Jesus admonished his students, in all ages, to follow his example and to emulate him in all his ways. What was his attitude when confronted by the false claims of error? Did he take a halting or halfway position? No! His reliance upon the truth of being—namely, that God is All-in-all and His creation perfect—could not be shaken by any argument of sense-testimony. Thus he bore witness always to the truth.
