My interest in Christian Science was aroused by a lecture...
My interest in Christian Science was aroused by a lecture on the subject. Two points impressed me very much: one was that "there are no miracles in Christian Science;" the second, that "harmony is the natural condition of man." These to me were new thoughts. I had never understood why God made men subject to ills, and had to break His own laws to cure them; also, inharmony seemed the natural condition.
To mortal sense my life was subject to much discord. I had had a severe nervous breakdown about six years before, and after a month in bed was unable to walk alone for some time. The doctor told me that two valves of my heart were defective, and I must always use great care. Previous to this illness, on account of severe headaches, the doctor had ordered me always to wear glasses; which I did. About three years ago, I had neuritis in my back, arms, and feet so badly that I could not sleep. I was constantly taking medicine, especially in the winter months, when I wore a thermogene wool pad well over the top of my back. This pad and the glasses I was wearing at the lecture; and if any one had told me that night that I should dispense with both within three months, I should have thought it impossible. However, that is exactly what happened. A short time after the lecture I borrowed a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. My interest deepening, I soon bought a copy, which I always read in bed at night. I shall never forget the light that came to me while reading page 14, line 12. It was like a command to be obeyed, and at once: "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual ..." The thought swept over me like a flood, What a wonderful thing! And I knew it was true. I repeated many times mentally, "Life and intelligence ... purely spiritual." What a load was gone; my life was God's, not mine to worry about! I slept as I had not slept for years. Next morning I knew I did not need my glasses. I have not worn them since, and have not been so free from headaches since a child.
For some weeks I continued reading till early morning, and felt each day more refreshed in mind and body than ever before. One night later on, I was agreeably surprised to find I had been sleeping on my left side. This I had been unable to do for many years. Another night, I left off the thermogene wool pad. All next day error kept suggesting doubt as to my wisdom; but each time the battle was won by the truth, and complete victory was gained. Since then neuritis has gradually lost all claim on me, and now I am perfectly free.
