I am very grateful for what Christian Science has done...
I am very grateful for what Christian Science has done for me. When I was seven months old, I fell out of bed and suffered severe injuries of the head. The doctors told my mother I could not live. They said my brain was injured. There was nothing that was not done for me. Up to the age of three I had frequent convulsions. My mother was advised to take me to Hoboken, New Jersey. There I was under treatment for about three months, without any result. My mother was then advised to see a rabbi who had just come to New York and was supposed to perform wonders in healing. I was placed under his treatment, which included the use of herbs and prayer, but again without any result.
By that time I was four and a half years old. Then followed all sorts of children's diseases, also double pneumonia and spinal trouble. I was not able to walk, talk, or feed myself. I could hear and understand, but could not speak. I was given electric baths for twenty-one months, four treatments every week, but there was no change. Finally the doctors declared they could do nothing more for me; that my case was hopeless. They said I had paralysis of the vocal chords. When I was eleven years old, I began to speak like a little child. Then the doctor advised that I have a private teacher; also that I go to public school. The principal would not accept me, so my doctor wrote a letter explaining my case, and finally I was accepted. I attended public school until I was nineteen. I was under the doctor's care constantly. I could not even dress myself, but was obliged to depend upon my mother's help. Magnetic treatment was tried, but without any benefit.
Then followed sciatic rheumatism. I was examined by a specialist, who used the X-ray. He said he could do nothing, and that probably I would be disabled all my life. The pain was unbearable. At this time a lady who was a Christian Scientist, noticing my condition, asked my father if he would like to try Christian Science for me. He consented, and she brought a book for me to read. Another Scientist came to see me, bringing a practitioner with her. That was on December 18, 1912. Thank God, from that time I have not had material help of any sort. God is my only physician. Many physical difficulties have vanished, never to return. It is more than seven years since I obtained my first position, which I still hold. In that time I have been advanced twice. I am now able to walk five or six miles at a time without feeling tired.
