It was while attending a meeting help by an evangelist that I first heard of Christian Science and its healing power. One evening the speaker said, "If there are any Christian Scientists attending these meetings, will they please occupy this corner of the building, as it is very drafty, and you know drafts do not hurt them." "Surely," as we read in Psalms, "the wrath of man shall praise thee." Drafts had been the cause of much discomfort in our home, and the remark meant far more to me than the speaker realized. Almost immediately afterwards I made a visit to my former home, and to my great surprise I found several of my relatives studying Christian Science. Some had been healed of sicknesses of long standing; while others had been lifted from the depths of sin. In speaking with one of them I said, "But I do not need Christian Science; I am healthy;" and the answer was, "You have the wrong concept of health, which does need to be corrected; health is holiness, while you believe health is dependent upon material conditions." How true was her remark! And as I considered it, I realized my bondage.
I procured a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and I shall never forget the impression made by the first sentence I found there (Pref., p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." But as I continued to read, I found so many statements that conflicted with my former teachings that the only way I could accept them was by verification from the Scriptures. I then obtained a concordance to the Bible, also to Science and Health, and began to study by comparing the two books. I first took up the definition of God, then of man and the universe; and to my great surprise I found nothing that contradicted the Scriptures. But I found an explanation of them which brought their true meaning to light, making them applicable now; and I immediately began to put it into practice.
I was first healed of a stomach and bowel disorder from which I had suffered most of my life. A little later I dispensed with spectacles, which I had worn for twelve years. I had been told by optometrists I should always be compelled to wear them. This was twelve years ago; and I have never felt the need of them since. As the years have gone by, I have had many opportunities to prove that Christian Science does heal every for, of discord. I have been most beautifully protected form accident; and even in the midst of seeming accidents I have found God there.
