Christian Science teaches that God is the divine Principle of the universe, and that through the spiritual understanding of God all discord can be destroyed. This corresponds to the teaching of Christ Jesus, who was the most perfect demonstrator of Christian Science the world has ever seen. The first chapter, on Prayer, in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, begins with the statement, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."

Christian Science teaches that God is the only creator, and that sin, disease, and death are not the creations of God, who is infinite good; that they have no place in the eternal reality of being, and therefore must be temporal falsities. They could never be removed, if they were realities. Christian Science is Christian because it is the practice of Christ Jesus, healing the sick, reforming the sinner, and comforting the sorrowing through spiritual means, in fulfillment of his command. It is scientific, because it is based on divine Principle; and the demonstration of it is governed by spiritual law.
