Some time ago, while thinking how much I had to be...
Some time ago, while thinking how much I had to be grateful for since taking up the study of Christian Science, I realized I had never been put to a great test, and wondered, in case of severe accident or sickness, to what extent I should prove loyal to God, through the teachings of Christian Science.
A short time after this, I called on a friend. Upon entering the house, I was informed that the little girl was ill. The mother asked me into the bedroom (knowing I had formerly been a medical nurse), and wanted to know what the disease was. I did not answer her; but the child was in convulsions. A Christian Science practitioner was asked to work for her. Error tried to suggest that something ought to be done materially or the child would die. I was, however, able to declare the truth, and to stand, knowing that she was God's image, and could not know discord or pain. A sense of peace came with this declaration, and I was content to leave all to God. In a short time the child was asleep, and on awakening, insisted on getting up to play.
A few days later, while crossing a railroad track, I slipped off one of the ties, and went down so quickly I was stunned. A human voice asking me if I were hurt brought the realization that I was on the ground, declaring the truth, with one foot doubled under me. I was assisted to my feet; and an offer was made to take me to my home, which was about one half mile away. This occurred on a Saturday night. When my shoe was removed there was every evidence of a dislocation of the ankle, and the pain and swelling extended to the knee. I arose, however, at seven o'clock the next morning to perform my household duties before leaving for church at nine. About eight o'clock, I was standing by a table, when there was a very perceptible noise as of bones grating together, and the ankle bones became adjusted. The pain, soreness, and swelling had entirely disappeared by Monday.
