Christian Science denies that pounding a piece of iron...
Times
Christian Science denies that pounding a piece of iron is any proof of its reality, or of the reality of matter. Material science teaches that a piece of iron results from the cohesion of numerous infinitesimal particles, and that two pieces of iron may be welded or united into one piece by heating and hammering, thus bringing the particles, composing such pieces so closely together that the force or law of cohesion can act. We may say then that a piece of iron results from the operation of the law of cohesion. Remove the law, and what becomes of the iron? Our senses, then, recognize the manfestation, but not the actual working of the law. Understanding that the law acts, we can weld the iron. Hence, we may mistakenly look upon a piece of iron as an entity existing apart from the law of cohesion.
It is even so with the human body. We look upon it erroneously as a material reality possessing life and intelligence. When we do so, we are unmindful of the fact that life and intelligence are properties of Mind and not of matter. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 124) we read: "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind. They belong to divine Principle, and support the equipoise of that thought-force, which launched the earth in its orbit and said to the proud wave, 'Thus far and no farther.'"
Christian Science denies the reality or existence of any power opposed to God. The Bible plainly states, There is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." We know that God is Love, and that God is good, Hence the force which Christian Science denies, is a blind, headlong, destructive, cruel force. Jesus the Christ understood the nothingness of destructive force when he said in the face of a severe storm, "Peace, be still," and there ensued a "great calm." It was the presence of the power of God, which he perfectly understood, that triumphed over the fury of that storm on the Sea of Galilee. That the world but little understands the way out of the confusion that results from material thinking, is evident from the fact that destructive storms, earthquakes, floods, and lightning flashes are commonly spoken of as acts of God, or even as evidence of the wrath of God. Since we are coming to understand, in part, the so-called physical law behind these manifestations, we are able to harness the winds, conserve the floods, and control electricity in such ways as to bring comfort and safety; and to lift the burdens of toil from the shoulders of men. Discovery of the law of divine Mind, which governs all things, frees us from the burden of superstition and limitations. And what, after all, are our limitations but ignorance of God and His law?
