Will you allow me to correct a false impression with regard to the practice of Christian Science? In your issue of recent date, it was stated that Macdonald Smith's wife "is a devout Christian Scientist, and there is a pretty story that she wills success to him as he prepares to play every shot." As the statement connects will-power with the profession and practice of Christian Science, let me emphatically deny the implication. It is only ignorance of the teaching of Christian Science which could invent such a story, for every Christian Scientist knows that, as Mrs. Eddy has said in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 144): "Human will-power is not Science. Human will belongs to the so-called material senses, and its use is to be condemned. ... Truth, and not corporeal will, is the divine power which says to disease, 'Peace, be still.'' In the realm of sport, as in every other sphere of right human activity, Christian Science of constant of help by enabling one to overcome self-will, pride, fear, envy, uncharitableness, and every other form of selfishness, and to manifest more of the divine qualities of intelligence, wisdom, justice, mercy, goodness, which tend to bring out higher ideals and a better sense of comradeship in work and play.
