Servants of God
The thought of man as a servant of God has doubtless opened the way to many healings in Christian Science. Many a Christian Science demonstration is accompanied by that sense of humility and obedience which indicates the clear recognition of man as a servant, and, above all, as God's servant. Certain it is that those who have proved of greatest service to mankind are those who have seen themselves most clearly as servants of God.
Abraham, Moses, Isaac, Jacob, Paul are a few of the many whose lives were filled with good works as a result of their clear perception of themselves as servants of God. That the works of Jesus outshone all others was the natural outcome of his more consecrated allegiance to the Father. With the kingdoms of the world within his grasp, with a greater temptation to self-glorification facing him than ever confronted another, he was able to remind himself, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." And then, it will be remembered, the devil left him and "angels came and ministered unto him."
Angels come and minister unto us, too, every time we refuse obedience to satanic mortal mind and become subject to the directions and control of divine Mind. A dictionary definition of "servant" is "any person employed by another and subject in his employment to his employer's directions and control; an agent who is subject to the direction and control of his principal." To those who recognize their "principal" in divine Principle, God, and look to Him to direct and control their every thought and action, there are far greater rewards than can ever be paid by human employers. But in order to serve God most effectively, must quit serving a human employer? It will be recalled that Jesus said in his parable regarding those who should inherit the kingdom of heaven, "The King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
