Ever since a girl of twelve I had suffered periodically...

Ever since a girl of twelve I had suffered periodically from what the doctors finally pronounced chronic appendicitis and curvature of the spine. While visiting at Long Island, Florida, I had an acute attack, and the doctor who was called said an immediate operation was necessary to save my life. While I was convalescing so that I might take the boat trip to Tampa, which was about seventy miles away, one of the neighbors called to see me and asked me to try Christian Science before submitting to an operation. Needless to say, I tried everything else first, and then came to the conclusion that "man's extremity is God's oppotunity." I was taken to a practitioner's office so weak that I had to lie on a couch in her waiting room, and on seeing me her companion told the practitioner that she thought I had passed on. Without going further into detail, I am grateful to say that I was healed in two treatments, and was able to take strenuous exercise at the end of a week. Simultaneously with my healing came a position as teacher of dramatic education in high school, where, with my gradually unfolding understanding of Truth, came the same portion of success.

It is eight years now since I learned of the divine Principle of all Science. With the application of its rules I have been able to solve, sometimes with the help of loving practitioners, all sorts of problems; and I am always grateful for these opportunities. If I knew that I could not obtain another one, a million dollars could not buy my Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, for the understanding of the truth contained in its pages carries one to "the Horeb height where God is revealed" (ibid., p. 241). My gratitude for Christian Science is unbounded.
