Scientific Demonstration of Peace

On pages 214 and 215 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy makes a statement which is absolutely true, but which is altogether incredible to the so-called human mind relying on the evidence of material sense. "Spirit's senses are without pain, and they are forever at peace," she writes. "Nothing can hide from them the harmony of all things and the might and permanence of Truth." These two sentences present to mortals an entirely new view of existence. The door which false material sense keeps closed is thrown wide open by them, and one is allowed to look out upon a universe—the real universe of Truth—where harmony and peace eternally reign.

Now the truth that the real spiritual universe exists as absolutely perfect but unknown to material sense has been in some degree sensed by every prophet and seer who has lived on earth. It was spiritual sense that revealed the truth to them,—spiritual sense, which exists wholly apart from so-called material sense, and with which it has no partnership whatsoever. Seemingly buried amid the debris of material beliefs, spiritual sense, like the embers of a smoldering fire, has continued to glow, ever and anon bursting into flame and bringing to light the things of Spirit. One revelation of God and then another has been made through this God-given faculty, until to-day the spiritual universe, the universe of God, is acknowledged by many to be the one and only tangible reality.

It cannot be doubted that Christ Jesus had a marvelous understanding of the spiritual universe. It was this understanding which enabled him in numerous instances to overthrow the supposititious laws of matter. Through it he healed the sick, forgave—or destroyed—sin, comforted sorrow, raised the dead. Every miracle (so called) he performed, proved the correctness and the reliability of his spiritual understanding. His mental attitude was that of one who comprehended with utmost clarity the allness and perfection of spiritual creation and the unreality and powerlessness of that which mortals call material existence.
