[Written for the Sentinel]

True Vision

I watched the moon in evening skies,
When near its side a bright star shone.
This vision fair that met my eyes,
Though free to all, seemed all my own.

And later, with my duties o'er,
Although forgetting it was night,
I sought the vision as before,
But lo, 't was lost unto my sight;

And yet I knew, as I looked out
Through darkened skies,—far into space,—
The moon and star were in the light,
Unchanged, and in their wonted place.

And thus it ever is with man,
God's child. Oh, for the vision fair
That looks through sin, disease, and death,
And sees man perfect in God's care!
