Anticipating early dissolution according to the verdict...
Anticipating early dissolution according to the verdict of the medical profession, I yielded to my wife's advice to try Christian Science, but with no hope of a favorable outcome. A long period of extremely slow improvement followed. With the same faithfulness, however, which I had displayed in following the directions of numerous physicians recommended by well-meaning friends, I began the study of spiritual causation as revealed in Christian Science.
During the earlier years of my study of this Science I was fortified, in my determination to persist, by perusing the many testimonies of healing which appear in the Christian Science periodicals. Listening to similar testimonies at the Wednesday evening meetings in a branch church in a large city, and noting the sincerity and gratitude of those who testified, was also a great aid. One cannot be too grateful for those who, with hearts overflowing with expressions of rejoicing for their healings, break down the suggestions that because of lack of past experience in speaking they cannot give a good testimony. Sometimes one sentence uttered falteringly is more convincing than the most studied talk. We can all contribute our widow's mite to these Wednesday evening meetings, which our Leader has established to publish abroad the personal proof of the efficacy of Truth, as in the days of the Master.
In my own case, the chief difficulty to be overcome, and the one which was responsible for my tardy recovery, was the continued disposition to personalize error. Years of training had led me to hold individuals—and not the errors of the carnal mind—responsible for transparent wrongs. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 318), "Two points of danger beset mankind; namely, making sin seem either too large or too little." Nevertheless, many healings have taken place and some progress has been made during the sixteen years that have elapsed since the medical profession pronounced its verdict. Much greater changes have yet to take place in the elimination of the tares that mortal mind has so sedulously sown in my thought.
