As a child, God was always very near to me; and I would...
As a child, God was always very near to me; and I would turn to Him to answer anything that disturbed me. Later on, it seemed harder to keep close to Him; and sometimes He seemed very far off. Yet, I still felt that in some way He would help me and show me what I should do. I was an active worker in an orthodox church, and no one knew of the struggle going on within my thoughts to find the God of my childhood's faith. Everything seemed to lead to stone walls, and I was very unhappy; but like a ray of light from a candle there would come the thought that God would show me the way to go.
One day I was offered a position in a distant city; and upon entering upon these new duties, I became acquainted with two students of Christian Science. Some of the other girls made light of the religion, but one day I picked up The Christian Science Journal and read some of the articles. I was greatly interested, and asked these two Scientists to tell me about their religion. I am indeed grateful for their kindness in answering my questions, and for the loan of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. My heart was full of great joy as I sat down in my room that evening and read Mrs. Eddy's beautiful chapter on Prayer. I was healed of wearing glasses through this reading. I had worn them for a long time. Three eye specialists had told me I should always have to wear them; and one, a short time before, had said I should have to wear thicker lenses every few years.
A few weeks after taking up this study, I was healed of acute indigestion. I was at the office when the attack came on and was taken home in a car. A practitioner was called, and immediately the pain ceased, though the complete healing did not come until the next day. This healing meant much to me. I have never had a return of the trouble, and that was about eight years ago. Since that time I have had many other healings. Not all have been instantaneous, but through them I have gained a better understanding of God and man because of a cleansing and purifying of thought.
