During the past three years I have been experiencing an increasing sense of freedom and peace through a clearer understanding of the nature and relations of God and man, as revealed through the study of Christian Science. My first experience of its practical beneficial effects was when I was entirely relieved in a very few minutes, with the help of a Christian Science practitioner, of intense pain from a tooth. I had not been free from pain for a week, and a dentist had refused to extract the tooth on account of an abscess at the root, but had drilled through the old filling and left it. On my return a short time afterwards to have the filling renewed, the dentist remarked that he could find no trace of any septic condition, and could not understand the case. This experience, and the change that I could see in the health and happiness of the friend who brought Christian Science to my notice, led me to begin to study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which was kindly lent to me. A Bible was purchased, as we had none in the house, not having had any use for it, although we had been brought up as regular churchgoers.
Since that time there has been progress in every direction. Previously I had suffered from indigestion, chronic rheumatism, frequent headaches, and an early morning cough which was a nuisance to me and to the whole household. These, together with the habit of smoking, have fallen away completely. When first I began to study the textbook and found Mrs. Eddy's references to the use of tobacco, it seemed to me quite unnecessary for her to have said what she did on the subject; but, although at that time there seemed to be a feeling of resentment, I lost all desire to smoke after about a year's study, without any special thought of getting rid of the habit.
A keen sense of self-consciousness, which had always seemed a terrible burden, has been so lifted that, through endeavoring to realize that "I can of mine own self do nothing," I was recently enabled to give a long lecture; and although the lantern failed halfway through, and the room was in total darkness for some time, I was able to carry on until the defect was remedied, free from any sense of confusion.
