Unselfish Love

The life and the teachings of Christ Jesus constitute an undivided whole, and are throughout a consistent expression of the Christ, Truth. They reflect the love of God for man, in abiding, unselfish tenderness. All the sayings and works of the Master have as their motive this selfless, spiritual affection; and once a student's dawning vision perceives this glorious fact, the Scriptures become illumined, and their integrity begins to shine as the daystar on the path of each day's experience.

Jesus was an obedient son, who, although he knew at twelve years what his life-work was to be, yet fulfilled his duty to those who cared for him as human parents, returning with them to Nazareth to learn the humble trade of a carpenter. Through this simple obedience the purpose of God was effected, that this child, who heard the call to be a priest unto Him, should be wholly taught of God and sheltered in quiet. Thus Jesus grew in understanding. At the age of thirty, equipped and strengthened by God, he came forth to deliver his wonderful message of the ever-presence of the kingdom of heaven, and to heal mankind.

Once, as Jesus was teaching, he was informed that his mother and brethren were without; and he asked, "Who is my mother, or my brethren?" He was not repudiating his apparent human obligations to these, but rather was he seizing the opportunity to show those present more of the universal nature of the Christ and to extend the sense of love's obligation.
