Christian courtesy is marked by the spirit of thoughtfulness...

Presbyterian Witness

Christian courtesy is marked by the spirit of thoughtfulness and consideration and kindness. . . . Under its influence, a man's own life is saved from meanness, and the best in a man's fellow has a chance to come forth from its banishment to the place of authority and power once more. Like most other graces, it blesses him who gives and him who takes. It always makes for unity and peace. When it must, for conscience' sake, speak an unwelcome truth, it speaks the truth in love; and even if it wounds, it wounds to heal. Its severity is the severity of love. It is one expression of that spirit of love which is central in the social life of the Christian. In our speech, why should we try to hurt? Or if definite intent to hurt is lacking, how can we justify our thoughtless remarks which so often cause pain and create resentment and bitterness? We can, if we will, speak that which is good for the purpose of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers and grieve not the holy spirit of God.
