An article in the Christian Science Sentinel entitled...

An article in the Christian Science Sentinel entitled "Protection" has reminded me of the constant protection which Christian Science has afforded me during my whole life, more especially during that part of it which I spent in France during the war.

I realized this most clearly when in the midst of the air raids which were a constant menace to the troops in the lines of communication and at the base depots in 1916, 1917, and 1918. Some one in Canada sent me a small card containing the ninety-first psalm; and this, folded inside my khaki "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I always carried in one pocket of my trench coat. Naturally, there was no opportunity to read while bombs and shells were falling, and while there was work to be done; yet, I knew that God is always present, that even if the pestilence or shell came nigh our dwelling, it could not harm. Confidence was inspired in my thought, and reflected itself throughout the camp.

The ever-presence of God manifested itself most strongly, too, during the influenza epidemics. After a three weeks' practically incessant period of nightly air raids, and a two weeks' period of strenuous physical drill and instruction, during the hottest weather, I woke up to find myself in a military hospital. It appeared that I had been there for three days, and that the medical officers were undecided whether I would recover. It did not occur to me to wonder how to get treatment. I knew that even if there were no seeming way, divine Love would meet my need, if necessary, without the loving help of a practitioner. I was not surprised to have a note handed to me from an orderly in the hospital across the road. The note read that he had noticed my being carried into the hospital on a stretcher, and recognized me as an attendant at the church services in Boulogne, and had cared for me according to his best knowledge of Christian Science. He had also written to the First Reader of the Boulogne society; and that very afternoon she visited the hospital, bringing me some literature and a copy of Science and Health. My own books were in camp, as I had been unconscious when they brought me to the hospital. In less than a week I left the hospital for a convalescent camp; and in two weeks I was back at duty.
