In the summer of 1916, when a young girl at home...
In the summer of 1916, when a young girl at home, I had what the doctors termed black measles in the worst form, which left my lungs very weak. As time went on, I seemed gradually to become weaker, till I could hardly get around. The doctor said my lungs were in a serious condition and advised my parents to take me to a hospital in a neighboring town for an examination. At the hospital several doctors examined my lungs and said one was completely gone and the other partly gone, and I could not possibly live over three months at the longest; but if I were taken West immediately, I might live that long.
A very dear friend who had had a wonderful healing in Christian Science came to see us and told us it was not necessary to go away, as God could heal as well in one climate as in another. But we were so overcome with fear that we could not understand this; so in a few days we left for Colorado with all kinds of medicine. On the train a lady and her daughter had the berth across from us. In the morning they began to study the Lesson-Sermon, and my mother asked if it were not Christian Science they were studying. They said it was, and asked if we would care to read with them. During the Lesson-Sermon we must have lost ourselves as far as our material beliefs were concerned, for from then on I steadily improved and felt like a new person. I never once thought of the medicine I had with me until we arrived at our destination, when I immediately destroyed it. We were then convinced our trip would not have been necessary, as I was nearly healed on the train through the understanding of the truth which these loyal students had of Christian Science.
After we were settled in Boulder, Colorado, we went to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting and met a practitioner, who took my case, and whose help was very lovingly given. We purchased "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and the Quarterly. Each day we studied, and went to the practitioner's. It was just four weeks from the time we left home till we started back again. I was perfectly healed. That was eight years ago; and I have been well and in perfect health ever since. We have had many more demonstrations in our family, all proofs of God's love and protection.
