[Written for the Sentinel]

Love Has Been Before

Should I climb a narrow stair,
Face a closèd door,
Yet I know that even there
Love has been before.

Leads my way through forest dim,
Over barren moor,
Quietly I trust in Him,—
Love was there before;

Or across a rolling sea
To some alien shore;
Still no fear can trouble me:
Love has gone before.

Blessed Presence! Calm, abiding
With us evermore;
We find nor place nor hiding
Love knew not before.
